Dr Jazz and the Cheshire Cats Big Band

Saturday 3/6/2006

Pyramid Arts Centre, Warrington

"East meets West"

Dr Jazz and the Cheshire Cats present a programme of some of the most exciting contemporary writing for big band. This is a rare opportunity to hear the contrasting works of Maria Schneider and Gordon Goodwin, based in New York and Los Angeles respectively, performed side by side. In the second half of the concert, vocalists Jo Robinson and Peter Whittles will recreate Robbie Williams’ Live at the Albert big band concert, which launched his successful album Swing When You’re Winning.

Maria Schneider served apprenticeships with jazz arrangers Gil Evans and Bob Brookmeyer in New York in the late 1980s. She wrote pieces for the Village Vanguard Orchestra and then formed her own band with which she continues to tour and record her compositions.

Gordon Goodwin is a three time Emmy Award winner and a multi-Grammy nominee. He composes extensively for film and television in addition to his quirky and virtuosic charts for his LA-based Big Phat Band.
